Project MAT4-GRID: Equipment and components for electricity grids. Synthesis Report of 2017

The document presents a summary of the results achieved in research, of a highly experimental nature, aimed at the study, implementation and testing of new materials, capable of significantly improving the performance of components and equipment of the transmission network.

This document provides a summary of the main results of the activities in the annual period (PAR 2017)of the project "Equipment and components for electricity grids".

The report is preceded by an introductory chapter which illustrates the principle of national andinternational research programs, and the main objectives of the three-year project, followed by chapterswith a description of the activities carried out on the two lines in which the project is structured. Thegeneral objective of the project is to carry out research, of a highly experimental nature, aimed at thestudy, implementation and experimentation of new materials, able to significantly improve theperformance of components and equipment of the transmission network. The chapter shows the keyresults, the objectives and reasons for the research and development phases thereof, and a brief summaryof the activity carried out in the previous PAR.
Then follows a brief description of the activities in thework of research groups and standardization at national and international level.The main activities performed in the period of PAR 2017 are relevant to:

• Study and characterization of surface treatments of aluminum and its alloys aimed at obtaining antiiceproperties of metallic conductors.
• Development of hydrophobic or hydrophilic coatings for glass insulators.
• Outdoor characterization of ice-phobic conductors, for distribution and transmission lines, at theWILD station and overhead power lines.
• Development and experimentation on overhead lines of passive devices able to allow the detectionof the formation of sleeves on the line conductors.
• Modeling and measurements on new insulators and taken from the service in the presence of nonconductivedefects between the fiberglass rod and the silicone housing
• Continuation and conclusion of the activity of defining test protocols and characterizing HTLSconductors with innovative cores in composite material (Kevlar cores and carbon fibers withtrapezoidal elemental wires).
• Extension of the parametric comparison between SFCL and limiting reactors with the analysis ofdifferent application scenarios in public and private networks
• Design, implementation and experimental characterization of single-phase prototypes of SFCL withSAT 2G tapes based on newly developed YBCO. Development of numerical modeling on the newsuperconducting tapes starting from the experimental surveys.
• Development of simulation methods for the study of fluid-dynamic phenomena in cryostats ofsuperconducting cables in innovative configurations.

The action of dissemination of knowledge has been practiced continuously through the publication ofarticles and conference presentations, whose details are reported in the concluding chapter.
