EFFICIENZA 2014 - Electricity savings in the fields of civil, industry and services

The article shows that the adoption of a DC system could lead to a simplification in the power supply with a significant increase of efficiency of the entire lighting system.

In street lighting systems is widespread the use of high-pressure sodium lamps. These light sources are characterized by the absorption of distorted current waveforms and phase-shifted with respect to the supply voltage, thus requiring the adoption of appropriate measures not to cause disturbance to the electricity grid. The introduction of LED seems to be very promising and it is widely believed that this type of lamps will replace, in a not too distant future, the traditional light sources.

Starting from the consideration that the LEDs are basically "diodes", the question arises whether it would be convenient to have them directly using a power distribution system in DC. The article shows that the adoption of a DC system could lead to a simplification in the power supply with a significant increase of efficiency of the entire lighting system.
