Smartainability® is the innovative approach developed by RSE to evaluate, in terms of improved sustainability and quality of service, the effectiveness of measures and technologies deployed in smart cities.

Expo 2015, considered like a smart city, acts as an environment that pays attention to people’s needs, rational resources management, sustainable development and economic sustainability. An environment with more efficient and usable (smart) services, and with more environmental sustainable and energy efficient consumptions. Evaluating Expo’s partners measures and technologies effectiveness in order to achieve these aims, means to evaluate the smartness and sustainability of these solutions, and for these reasons a new analysis model has been created: Smartainability®. In this paper we analyze assets provided by Enel, Expo Smart grid and outdoor lighting, and Telecom/Tim Italia with the telecommunication and telepresence technologies.

The word “Smartainability” originates from two terms union, Smartness and Sustainability, and is based on two methodologies: Guidelines for conducting a cost-benefit analysis of Smart Grid projects, a project made by European Commission JRC to evaluate smart grids, and Smart Cities – Ranking of European medium-sized cities, realized by Vienna University of Technology, University of Lubljana, Delt University of Technology to evaluate smart cities. The aim of Smartainability® approach is to measure, with qualitative and quantitative informations, how far smart cities are more sustainable (and smart) thanks to smart technologies. In the paper, for the Expo Milano 2015 digital city, the innovative technologies are analyzed and the results displayed.
