This chapter presents some of the activities carried out within the research project TWENTIES (2010-2013) and subsequent developments carried out by partners, addressing technical solutions for the design and control of the future MTDC grids aimed to the connection of large offshore wind farms to the mainland AC systems.

This chapter presents some of the activities carried out within the research project TWENTIES (2010-2013) and subsequent developments carried out by partners, addressing technical solutions for the design and control of the future MTDC grids aimed to the connection of large offshore wind farms to the mainland AC systems.

The work deals with the functions expected from HVDC grids, topological aspects, converters, operation and protection issues, and the ancillary services that the offshore wind farms can provide to the continental AC grids through the HVDC grids.
