This paper reports the description of an innovative optical sensor for local electric field measurements and some results for the characterization of electric field shields.

The quantitative measurement of the electric field is a demanding task that has to be accomplished without perturbing the spatial distribution of the field itself and by using systems that can be operated safely also when intense electric fields have to be measured. Electro-optic sensors, where only dielectric components are employed, are the most appropriate candidates for such measurement. Until today no commercial electro-optic sensor for electric field measurements is available.

To overcome this problem, RSE optimized and tested a sensor based on a birefringent crystal. This system has a manifold of possible applications, ranging from insulating defects detection to the mapping of electric fields in the ambient where human beings have to be present or, such as in the innovative application we are presenting here, the characterization of new shielding masks for live line measurements.
