Solar cooling technologies: experimental results and system analysis

This report includes the final results of research activities on medium temperature solar cooling plants

In the current reference period, the advanced control architecture based on the predictive control appliedto a hybrid model (HMPC) was first completed and implemented on the existing solar cooling system.The control strategy adopted is a variant of the predictive control applied to hybrid systems, which arecharacterized by continuous (flows) and discontinuous (system configurations) variables.

The experimental campaign carried out in the summer period, July-September, has allowed to completethe analysis related to the potential benefits of the operation with variable configuration. The tests havebeen performed with different control techniques (simplified optimizer and HMPC control architecture).The results obtained confirmed the potential of the variable configuration operation in terms ofincreasing primary energy savings.

The solar cooling study activity was completed with system analysis (economic and network aspects)aimed at assessing the impact on the electricity market of a large-scale diffusion of solar thermal coolingsystems. From the energy analysis and the simulation of the electricity market to 2030, in the scenariosincluding the replacement of the electrically driven cooling systems of the tertiary sector with solarcooling, there were interesting positive effects such as: reduction of electricity demand, reduction ofCO2 emissions and reduction of summer load peak.
