Comparing Scenarios and Technologies: the Future of Europe from an Energy Perspective

Comparing Scenarios and Technologies: the Future of Europe from an Energy Perspective

On the 6th of December Rome will host a workshop titled HORIZON 2030 (and beyond): Technologies at the Centre of the Energy Transition. The event was organized by RSE in conjunction with the Italian presentation of Energy Technologies Perspectives 2017, IEA’s annual report.

What will the world of energy look like 15, 20 years from now, or even beyond? Making accurate predictions is risky, all the more so as we try to look much further into the future. However, experts in the field all agree on the need for it to be based on a smart, integrated, sustainable system of systems. Indeed, achieving decarbonization goals, ensuring the security and quality of energy supplies, building a new market – liquid, accessible, inclusive – where even end users can participate requires a radical paradigm shift in the current prevailing models.

Electrical energy generation can no longer stand alone; it will have to communicate and interact with gas and water supply chains, with heating and cooling, with transportation, facing up to new opportunities (first and foremost, the digital transformation) and new challenges (e.g. cybersecurity): an endeavor of substantial scale for new technologies.

Upon the presentation of ETP2017 (Energy Technologies Perspectives 2017) -  IEA’s annual report – RSE has thus organized the HORIZON 2030 (and beyond): Technologies at the Centre of the Energy Transition workshop, to be held in Rome on the 6th of December.

"Drawing on the different scenarios outlined in the ETP2017 - explains Michele de Nigris - the workshop will engage the main community stakeholders in an open discussion on the prospective European energy systems for 2030-2040, on the role of research (including with reference to noteworthy initiatives such as ETIP SNET, Mission Innovation, IEA Technical Collaboration Programs), on emerging technologies that will enable the ongoing transition”.

The interactive workshop will be held on the headquarters of Confidustia in Rome, Viale dell'Astronomia 30.
