Marine and ocean energy

The energy of marine currents and wave motion is the kinetic energy produced by the huge masses of moving water in seas and oceans, for which different types of turbines are used for electricity conversion.

Technologies for the exploitation of marine currents currently available are effective only in the presence of current regimes that are not generally found in the Mediterranean and in particular along the Italian coast; it is therefore necessary that the resource available is well described and that innovative technologies are taken into account, in order to assess the actual production possibilities of national coastal sites.

Within this sector, the primary objective of RSE is to develop a "Map of Italian Potential Energy from Waves and Marine Currents". The technologies that are more quickly adaptable to Italian coasts are those that use mixed generation systems and especially those designed for installation on coastal protection works that take advantage of wave motion.
